Easy-to-Implement Lifestyle Changes

Updated: Feb 23

This blog is meant to offer simple, practical shifts you can begin making today - small changes to your everyday routine that, over time, move you closer to a truly holistic and vibrant lifestyle.

I believe holistic living should feel empowering and energizing, not overwhelming or fear-driven. The suggestions I share here are not extreme overhauls. They are small, consistent adjustments I slowly implemented in my own life. And it was those steady, intentional shifts that gradually built the foundation for the vitality I now maintain.

Holistic health is not about perfection. It’s about direction. Small changes, practiced consistently, create powerful transformation.

Be sure to keep an eye on this blog as it will continue to evolve.

Here some of the most important places that I started:

I STOPPED cooking with aluminum, teflon, plastic, etc. and switched entirely to stainless steel and wooden cooking spoons and spatulas. When you cook with aluminum, teflon, or other toxic materials - the chemicals will leech into your food and accumulate in your body. When you google this, many sources will come up that tell you that there is no risk involved in cooking with these materials and 9 times out of 10 those sources sell those materials.

I use stainless steel pots & pans, wooden spoons & spatulas, and pyrex or corning cookware.

WATER - Drink filtered water. Even a brita water filter is better than tap water. I suggest avoiding bottled water as much as possible to avoid waste (we also do not know what kind of water is really in those bottles) Pray over your water, add quality sea salt to your water for minerals. I use a reverse osmosis system that remineralizes the water, but I used a brita filter for years. DO NOT DRINK DISTILLED WATER UNLESS YOU ADD MINERALS.

Not drinking fluid while you eat - drink fluids 20 minutes before and 20 minutes after each meal but not while you are eating. The fluid will reduce your stomach acid which is important to help break down your food.

A squatty potty - or a stool stool as I call it - using a stool to elevate your legs and feet while you are having a bowel movement. This position is anatomically correct for our body to eliminate waste and can make a huge difference in your digestive health.

Taking a brief walk after each meal - this is a must for anyone who struggles with crohns, IBS, indigestion, gas, heartburn, bloating, or other digestive discomfort. Taking a brief walk, even for 5 minutes, after each meal encourages peristalsis (the contraction of the digestive tissue that moves food through the digestive tract, breaking it down and absorbing nutrients as it does so), which improves the quality of our digestion and can reduce discomfort.

Change your laundry detergent & eliminate artificial fragrances - This includes perfumes, scented candles, body wash & shampoo and conditioners with artificial fragrances, air fresheners, car fresheners, etc. You may not notice right away, but these artificial fragrances are toxic chemicals that wreck havoc on your lymphatic, nervous, and immune systems.

Change your cleaning supplies - Most of the products sold to us for cleaning are loaded with toxic chemicals that linger for days, weeks, and months. I make a mixture of vinegar with white sage and rose petal tea! I make a strong tea of rose petals and white sage and fill jars 1/2 and 1/2 with the tea and vinegar. We do offer this tea blend here at Community Nourishment and I will post a link to it as soon as we have it in our shop!

Go outside as soon as you wake up - starting your day with fresh air & sunlight is a great way to harmonize your hormones, emotions, and set the tone for the day. I recommend closing your eyes and facing the sun for 5-15 minutes in the morning.

Start your day with hot lemon water - I recommend a fresh squeezed lemon, not artificial or processed lemon juice. If you don't like lemons you could use limes or even just hot water. Drink this before your coffee or eating anything. It stimulates your liver and digestive tract, helping your body to rid itself of all of the toxins it processed while you were sleeping. I now put tinctures in my lemon water before adding the hot water. It's a delicious, effective way to get your day started with medicine. CHEW YOUR FOOD - The more that you chew food, the easier it is for your digestive system to break the food down and receive nutrients.

Protect your sleep - For AT LEAST 60 minutes before you go to sleep - avoid screens. Cellphones, tablets, television - all of it. Dim your lights in the house - I use red light bulbs and when it's time to start getting ready for bed, I turn all of the lights red.

Reduce EMF & Screen exposure - Do not sleep with electronics in your room. Avoid putting phone up to your head as much as possible. Avoid bluetooth headphones - the cord may be inconvenient, but it is healthier. Turn your wifi router off at night if you can.

Regulate your screen time - Unfollow accounts and media outlets that make you feel depressed or anxious. Set a timer on your phone to limit your use of social media (most phones like iphones offer this feature). Do not believe everything you read or see. If it evokes a strong emotion, make sure you check the source and search for evidence.

Spend 15-20 minutes a day reading a book - reading physical books is like exercising for your brain! It strengthens the organ and you get to learn something or be taken away to another world for a time!
