Triphala: A Nourishing & Rejuvenating Herbal Formula

Triphala is one of my favorite nourishing and rejuvenating herbal formulas. It has been used for thousands of years in Ayurveda as a gentle yet powerful tonic for overall health and longevity.

The word Triphala literally means “three fruits.” This traditional formula combines three remarkable Ayurvedic berries:

Amalaki (Emblica officinalis)
Bibhitaki (Terminalia bellirica)
Haritaki (Terminalia chebula)

Together, these three fruits create a balanced formula that supports vitality, digestion, and the body’s natural detoxification processes.

One of the ways Triphala works is by helping the body gently remove accumulated wastes and obstructions from the tissues while also improving the body's ability to absorb and utilize nutrients. In simple terms, Triphala helps the body eliminate what it no longer needs while strengthening its ability to receive nourishment.

Triphala also tones and supports the intestinal membranes, helping to strengthen digestive tissues and relieve occasional spasms or sluggish digestion.

I particularly love working with this formula because it supports the health of the mucous membranes throughout the body, including the:

• digestive tract
• lungs
• sinuses
• reproductive tissues

Healthy mucous membranes are essential for protection, lubrication, and proper immune function, and Triphala helps maintain their balance.

Each fruit contributes unique properties to the formula:

Amalaki (Emblic Myrobalan)
Amalaki is one of the richest natural sources of vitamin C and is known for its powerful antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. It supports immune health, tissue repair, and overall vitality.

Bibhitaki (Belleric Myrobalan)
Bibhitaki is traditionally used to support the respiratory system and help clear excess mucus from the body. It is also known in Ayurveda for supporting healthy cholesterol levels.

Haritaki (Chebulic Myrobalan)
Haritaki is often referred to as the “king of herbs” in Ayurveda. It supports healthy digestion, elimination, and nervous system balance.

Traditional Uses of Triphala

According to The Way of Herbs (pg. 249–250), Triphala has traditionally been used for a wide variety of purposes including:

• supporting healthy digestion and elimination
• assisting with weight management
• improving circulation
• supporting healthy vision when used as an eyewash
• relieving occasional eyestrain

Triphala is also known for its protective and supportive effects on the liver, helping the body process and eliminate environmental toxins more efficiently.

In addition, it supports cardiovascular health by helping maintain healthy blood pressure and promoting healthy circulation.

Because of its expectorant and antimicrobial properties, Triphala can also help clear mucus from the respiratory tract and support the body in fighting infections.

Herbal Properties

Triphala is traditionally described as having the following herbal actions:

• Aperient (gently promotes healthy elimination)
• Hepatoprotective (supports and protects the liver)
• Expectorant (helps clear mucus from the lungs)
• Antioxidant
• Anti-inflammatory
