Shatavari – Asparagus racemosus

I have worked with Shatavari for many years and I love it so very much. (I know, I know. I say that about a lot of herbs!) but Shatavari truly holds a special place in my herbal arsenal.

Shatavari is a relative of the common asparagus plant and carries a cooling, moistening, and deeply nourishing action in the body.

The name Shatavari translates to “she who has one hundred husbands.” Traditionally it is said to be the herb for the woman with one hundred husbands - a playful way of expressing the plant’s powerful ability to nourish, strengthen, and support female vitality.

While this plant is highly revered for its work with the womb and reproductive system, Shatavari actually supports tissues throughout the entire body. Much of this effect may be related to the way Shatavari helps to rejuvenate and nourish the blood.

I speak about the importance of the blood in much of my work because the blood is what carries fresh nutrients to every cell of the body while also removing metabolic waste. Healthy circulation and well-nourished blood are foundational to vitality.

Also known as Indian Asparagus, Shatavari has traditionally been said to support the intellect. I believe this may be related to its nourishing effects on the kidneys and deep vital reserves of the body. In Traditional Chinese Medicine, the kidneys are considered a root of vitality and are said to nourish the brain and support mental clarity.

This is one of the reasons I include Shatavari in my Remember to Focus blend.

Shatavari is especially supportive for the mucous membranes throughout the body. It helps moisturize and protect tissues including the:

• lungs
• digestive tract
• urinary tract
• reproductive system

Because of this moistening and restorative quality, Shatavari is often used when tissues have become dry, irritated, or depleted.

It is also a key ingredient in my Mother’s Milk formula, where it supports nursing mothers by helping the body produce rich, nourishing breast milk.

Beyond its internal uses, Shatavari can also be infused into oils and used externally to support nerve, muscle, and joint discomfort, bringing a soothing and restorative quality to the tissues.

This is only a small peek into the world of Shatavari. Like many herbs, its true medicine reveals itself through relationship and experience.

Add this beautiful plant to your herbal toolkit, spend time working with her, and discover for yourself the nourishment she offers.
