Milk thistle, also known in my home as “liver seed,” is an incredible herb for nourishing, protecting, and regenerating the liver.
Prevention is key when it comes to health and healing, and milk thistle is widely regarded as one of the most supportive herbs for protecting the liver and helping to prevent chronic liver disease. One reason for this is that milk thistle helps inhibit the production of leukotrienes in the liver - inflammatory compounds that can contribute to tissue damage over time.
One of the primary active compounds in milk thistle is silymarin, a powerful flavonoid complex known for its protective effects on liver cells. Silymarin helps protect liver tissue from toxins and has even been studied for its ability to reduce damage from substances such as carbon tetrachloride and toxins found in Amanita (death cap) mushrooms.
Milk thistle is rich in flavonoids, which help increase the production of glutathione, one of the body’s most important antioxidants. Glutathione plays a critical role in detoxification and cellular protection, especially within the liver.
Not only is milk thistle an incredible herb for protecting the liver, it is also renowned for its regenerative capabilities.
Nourishing is my favorite word when it comes to herbal medicine, and regeneration might be my second favorite. The liver is one of the few organs in the body with the remarkable ability to repair and regenerate itself, and milk thistle helps support that natural process. One way it does this is by helping reduce fat accumulation in the liver, which can contribute to improved liver function over time.
True to its name, milk thistle has also traditionally been used to support breastfeeding mothers by helping encourage healthy milk production. Some studies and traditional practices suggest the best results occur when milk thistle is introduced within the first week after giving birth.
Because milk thistle’s beneficial compounds are not highly water-soluble, tea is not the most effective way to work with this herb. Instead, tinctures and capsules allow the active compounds to be extracted and absorbed much more effectively.
For those looking to support their liver and overall vitality, milk thistle is one of the most reliable and time-honored herbs available. I offer both milk thistle tincture and capsules for those who wish to incorporate this powerful plant into their wellness routine.
