Lobelia
(Lobelia inflata)
Lobelia is a very special herb to us here at Community Nourishment.
We often work with lobelia when targeting the respiratory system or aiming to relax muscles.
Lobelia is well known to offer support with asthma, muscle spasms, spasmodic coughs, upper respiratory complaints, and as an emetic (helping to induce vomitting). Lobelia even has a strong history of helping someone who has an anaphylactic allergy.
If you’re having respiratory spasms such as a persistent cough that is causing much discomfort or keeping you awake at night here are the doses we recommend for the tincture:
During the day - 5-7 drops in an oz of water every 20 minutes until the cough subsides.
Before bed - 10-15 drops in an oz of water before bed.
Lobelia is classified as an emetic, which can cause nausea or vomiting if to much is taken. In my experience working closely with this plant, I have found that I need 4+ full droppers to experience this effect, however every body is different and will respond differently so as always - we encourage you to take responsibility and work to build a relationship with this remedy. Start with a low dose and gradually increase until you find the dose that works for you. If you need some guidance in this area please reach out to us.
I also like to work with lobelia to help get to sleep at night - especially if it is muscle pains/spasms or restless leg syndrome that is a bother.
Again, the dosage would be 10-15 drops in an oz of water as needed.
I take around 20 -30 drops to relax and fall asleep but I recommend getting to know the remedy first and gradually increasing to that dose.
You may also apply the tincture directly on an area of the body that may be in pain - especially if the pain feels muscular or tight. Lobelia can help to relax the tissue around the area of pain and bring some blood and relief.
Lobelia has a long history of use and I highly recommend reading about it, getting to know it, and developing your own relationship with the herb! Please check our “Resources” tab for some of our favorite herbal references!
