Ginkgo Biloba

Ginkgo is one of the oldest living tree species on earth, often referred to as a “living fossil”, and its leaves have been used for centuries to support circulation, cognitive function, and overall vitality.

At its core, Ginkgo is a circulatory herb, with a particular affinity for the brain and nervous system.

Ginkgo helps to improve blood flow (microcirculation) by supporting the dilation of blood vessels and reducing excessive platelet aggregation. This allows blood to move more freely, delivering oxygen and nutrients to tissues that may otherwise be undernourished.

It is especially known for increasing circulation to:

  • The brain
  • The eyes
  • The ears
  • Peripheral tissues (hands, feet, extremities)

Because of this, Ginkgo is often used when there are signs of stagnation, where blood flow is not reaching certain areas efficiently.

Key Actions & Benefits

1. Cognitive & Nervous System Support
By improving blood flow to the brain, Ginkgo may support:

  • Memory and focus
  • Mental clarity
  • Cognitive resilience over time

This is one of the primary reasons it has been widely studied in relation to age-related cognitive decline.

2. Circulation & Cardiovascular Health
Ginkgo’s effects on circulation may contribute to:

  • Supporting healthy blood pressure regulation
  • Assisting in maintaining balanced cholesterol levels
  • Strengthening and protecting blood vessels through its antioxidant activity

Its antioxidant compounds (flavonoids and terpenoids) help protect tissues from oxidative stress, which plays a role in vascular damage over time.

3. Headaches, Tension & Pain Patterns
When headaches, neck, or shoulder tension are linked to poor circulation or stagnation, Ginkgo may be supportive.

By increasing blood flow, the body is better able to:

  • Move out metabolic waste and inflammatory byproducts
  • Deliver fresh oxygen and nutrients
  • Relieve pressure and tension in affected areas

This same principle can extend to other areas of the body where circulation may be contributing to discomfort.

4. Ears, Eyes & Sensory Support
Because of its affinity for the head, Ginkgo is often used in cases of:

  • Ringing in the ears (tinnitus)
  • Visual strain or fatigue
  • General sensory support

These effects are largely tied to improved circulation in the small vessels that supply these delicate systems.

5. Emotional & Stress Support
Ginkgo may also be supportive in cases of:

  • Anxiety
  • Mental fatigue
  • Stress-related tension

This is partly due to its ability to support both circulation and nervous system balance, helping the body come out of states of constriction and into better flow.

Suggested Use

For more acute support (such as headaches):
Take 1–2 full droppers in a small amount of water every 45 minutes to 1 hour until relief is experienced.

For general support:
Take 3–5 full droppers per day, always diluted in about 1 oz of water.

Important Considerations

  • Ginkgo may thin the blood, so use caution if taking blood-thinning medications or before surgery
  • Consistency is key—its benefits are often more noticeable with regular use over time
  • As with all herbs, individual response may vary

Ginkgo reminds us that circulation is life, that where blood flows, nourishment follows.

When we support movement within the body, we support clarity, resilience, and function on every level.

And as always, take the time to study the plants, ask questions, and build your own relationship with the medicine.
