Fennel seed is one of my favorite herbs to work with. (I know, I say that about many herbs, but I truly mean it!)
Each plant has its own unique gifts, and fennel is one that consistently proves itself to be incredibly supportive for the digestive system.
Fennel seed is especially helpful for those who experience bloating, gas, or discomfort. Taking 1–3 dropper-fulls of fennel tincture about 15 minutes before a meal can help gently stimulate digestion and prepare the body to properly break down food. For those who experience chronic digestive discomfort, an additional dose about 15 minutes after eating may also be helpful.
Fennel works by stimulating digestive secretions and enzymes, which assist the body in breaking down food more efficiently. Often, digestive discomfort occurs simply because the food we eat is not being properly digested.
Fennel also encourages healthy peristalsis - the rhythmic muscular contractions of the intestines that move food through the digestive tract, helping to reduce stagnation and discomfort.
Beyond digestion, fennel seed can also be supportive for both stomach cramps and menstrual cramps, offering a gentle relaxing effect on smooth muscle tissue.
Fennel has long been used to support the respiratory system as well. It can help calm irritated airways and acts as a mild expectorant, assisting the body in loosening and expelling excess mucus.
This herb is also traditionally used to support nursing mothers, which is why fennel is included as a key ingredient in our Mother’s Milk formula.
Another lesser-known use for fennel is for eye health. Fennel seeds contain beneficial compounds and nutrients, including vitamin A. The seeds can be brewed into a tea, allowed to cool completely, and then used as a gentle eyewash to help soothe and support the eyes.
