Milk Thistle

Milk Thistle, also known in my home as "liver seed" is an incredible herb for nourishing, protecting, and regenerating the liver! Prevention is KEY when it comes to health & healing - and milk thistle is one of the best herbs for prevention of chronic liver disease - partly because it inhibits the production of leukotrienes in the liver, one of the most damaging chemicals found in the body. The silymarin in milk thistle is responsible for helping to prevent liver cell death from toxins like carbon tetrachloride and even the toxic effects of amanita (death cap) mushrooms. Milk thistle has a significant amount of flavonoids, which work to increase the production of glutathione, a strong antioxidant.

Not only is milk thistle a wonderful herb for preventing liver damage, it is also renowned for its REGENERATIVE capabilities! Nourishing is my 1st favorite word, and regenerate is my second favorite word! Just ONE of the many ways that milk thistle works to regenerate the liver is by lowering fat deposits in the liver.

True to it's name, milk thistle also helps breast-feeding mothers to produce milk! The best results are shown when the mother starts consuming milk thistle within the first week of giving birth.

Milk thistle is not water soluble, so milk thistle tea does not offer much benefit, however the tincture and capsules are a wonderful way to work with this herb, and I have both of them available! This blog is intended to provide information on this herb/remedy/formula that I use regularly in my practice. This blog is for educational purposes only, mainly for people who work with me or my remedies and are looking for the information on the remedies, how and why I use them, and what is in them. There is much more existing information on each herb and remedy and as always I encourage everyone to ask lots of questions and to dive into research for themselves as well as consulting with a professional.
